The UT Sailing Team has been in existence for over 50 years. The team was founded circa 1968. However, the precise start date is a subject of some debate.

Shortly after the inception of the UT Sailing Team, it split into two distinct groups that still exist today: the UT Sailing Team, and the UT Sailing Club. The UT Sailing Club is the more casual and non-competitive group, while the UT Sailing Team is more formal and competitive. Recently, the club was dissolved and left the team as the main sailing body on campus. The team calls Austin Yacht Club its home, and shortly following its inception at UT, the team rapidly became a major player in competitive college sailing.

These days, the team holds regular practices and travels to compete on an intercollegiate level. The team primarily sails 420’s and FJ’s.

The UT Sailing Team is a sponsored sport club within the UT’s RecSports program, and has historically been an entirely self-run team, meaning that all administrative and coaching duties were left to its members. It is only recently that this has changed, as the team now employs a coach.
