The UT Sailing Team has been in existence for over 50 years. The team was founded circa 1968. However, the precise start date is a subject of some debate.
Shortly after the inception of the UT Sailing Team, it split into two distinct groups that still exist today: the UT Sailing Team, and the UT Sailing Club. The UT Sailing Club is the more casual and non-competitive group, while the UT Sailing Team is more formal and competitive. Both the club and the team call Austin Yacht Club their home. Shortly following the split between the two groups of sailors at UT, the team rapidly became a major player in competitive college sailing.
These days, the team holds regular practices, has hired a coach, and travels to compete on an intercollegiate level. The team primarily sails FJ’s and 420’s (two-person dinghys) and owns a fleet of FJ’s.
The UT Sailing Team is a sport club within UT’s RecSports program, and has historically been an entirely self-run team, meaning that all administrative and coaching duties were left to its members. It is only recently that this has changed, as the team now employs a coach.
