Competing at Nationals

The UT Sailing Team has been nationally competitive for decades. Although it is uncertain that the following list is exhaustive (and it likely is not), listed below are the known years in which the UT Sailing Team has qualified for and competed at ICSA Nationals.

National Championship Titles

The UT Sailing Team holds four national championship titles:

  • 1973 Team Racing National Championship

  • 1979 Sloop National Championship

    • Sailors: Kelson Elam, Kelly Gough and Scott Young

  • 1981 Sloop National Championship

    • Sailors: Scott Young, David Chapin and Mark Hallman

  • 2001 Men's Singlehanded National Championship

    • Sailor: Bruce Mahoney

Hosting Nationals

The UT Sailing Team has hosted ICSA Nationals twice: once in 2005 and again in 2012. The sailing events were hosted at the Austin Yacht Club in Austin, Texas on Lake Travis.

The program on the right was prepared for the 2005 ICSA Nationals that were hosted by the UT Sailing Team. Within this program there is a schedule of events, a description of college sailing, a list of the district and ICSA representatives, a list of qualifying teams, results from singlehandeds and sloops, and accompanying advertisements from sponsors.

The UT Sailing Team also provided “A Preview of Austin: Home of the 2005 ICSA Spring Championships” to the teams visiting from around the country for this event. This preview resembles a travel guide that introduced the visiting teams to Texas, Austin, The University of Texas, Austin Yacht Club, and the UT Sailing Team. It provides many suggestions for things to see and do while in town. This preview can be viewed in full below.

The national sailing community visited Austin, Texas once again in 2012 when the UT Sailing Team hosted ICSA Nationals for a second time. On the right a program from 2012 can be viewed in full. It features everything sailors would need to know for the event including the schedule of events, history of past national regattas, letters of welcome and thanks from the UT Sailing Team, pictures, advertisements from sponsors, and more.
